Panama workers mark Labor Day
THOUSANDS of workers across Panama marked Labor Day, Sunday May 1, like millions across the world, by joining in marches to voice their opinions on some current issues.
In Panama City members of various union groups gathered in Plaza Porras to march through the main streets of Calidonia.
The event was attended by journalists, workers, miners, teachers and members of other organized demanding that the government comply with specific issues such as the price of the basic food basket, security in the country, potable water, street harassment against women and job opportunities.
May 1 is celebrated worldwide as Labor Day except in the country where the practice started.

In May 1886 a group of American workers struggling against labor exploitation and demanding better working conditions, launched the practice, which is still celebrated as a national holiday in many countries.
